How to Size an Electric Sauna Heater

The most common question we hear, and the most important to answer before you buy, is: how many kW do you actually need? The standard rule of thumb, used by Harvia and HUUM in their own sizing guides, is approximately 1 kW per 45 cubic feet of sauna room volume (length x width x height). This collection covers rooms from roughly 85 to 675 cubic feet, with sauna heaters ranging from 1.9 kW up to 15 kW.

However, if your sauna room has exterior walls exposed to cold weather, or a large glass panel or glass door, add 1 to 1.5 kW to your baseline calculation. Stone bed size also matters for the quality of your session. Larger stone beds, such as those found in the HUUM DROP series and the Harvia Cilindro cylinder design, retain heat longer and produce softer, more even löyly. You can browse our full selection of stones to pair with your heater.

On the electrical side, the Harvia Vega Compact 1.9 kW is the one model in this collection that runs on a standard 120V/20A household circuit. Most sauna heaters at 4.5 kW and above require a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30 to 60A depending on wattage.

Always confirm the circuit requirements with a licensed electrician before purchase. This applies whether you are heating an indoor traditional sauna, an outdoor sauna, or a barrel sauna paired with an electric heater.

Built-In, Digital, or WiFi Controls: Which Is Right for You?

Once you have your kW figured out, the next decision is how you want to control the heater. This collection offers three options, and the right one depends on your setup and how you use your sauna.

Built-in controls, as found on the Harvia KIP series, place the dial directly on the heater body. There is no separate panel to wire in, which makes installation simpler and keeps costs down. This is a practical choice for retrofit builds or straightforward indoor sauna installations.

External digital controls, such as the Harvia Virta and HUUM UKU, mount on the wall and give you a timer, temperature display, and more precise session management. For heaters above roughly 8 kW, an external panel is typically required by the heater’s configuration.

WiFi/app controls take this further: the HUUM UKU WiFi and the Saunum AIR with its Climate Equalizer both allow you to preheat your sauna remotely from a smartphone. The Saunum Climate Equalizer also circulates air to eliminate the hot-top/cool-floor temperature gradient that is common in standard electric sauna heaters. Several models in the grid above are sold as heater packages that bundle the heater, control, and stones together, including HUUM STU packages and Saunum AIR packages.

Electric Sauna Heater FAQ

How many kW do I need for my sauna?

Plan for approximately 1 kW per 45 cubic feet of sauna room volume. Add 1 to 1.5 kW if your room has exterior walls, large windows, or a glass door. If you are unsure, contact us, and we will spec the package for you.

Do electric sauna heaters need a special electrical circuit?

Most models at 4.5 kW and above require a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30 to 60A depending on wattage. The Harvia Vega Compact 1.9 kW is the exception in this collection and runs on a standard 120V/20A outlet. Always consult a licensed electrician before installation.

Can I pour water on an electric sauna heater?

Yes. All electric sauna heaters in this collection support löyly, which is the steam produced by pouring water on the stones. Combi models such as the Harvia Virta Combi HL8U1SA also include a built-in steam generator, letting you dial in humidity from a dry Finnish sauna session to a fuller steam-room experience without a separate unit.

What is the difference between a combi heater and a standard electric heater?

A standard electric sauna heater warms the stones for dry sauna and manual löyly. A combi heater adds an integrated steam generator so that you can adjust humidity from dry to steam-room levels in the same session. If you are also considering infrared saunas or outdoor saunas with wood-burning stoves, our team is happy to walk through the differences and help you find the right fit.
